Technological solutions to meet the next level of engine emissions reduction are on display at the stand of Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) at Intermat. The company is presenting its Tier 3 units for the construction equipment sector with key updates that will allow them to meet the requirements of Interim Tier 4 before the introduction date in 2011.

The company offers engines in the 40 to 753kW power bracket and these feature Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology to meet the current standard.

The next generation of engines will need a range of different solutions to meet the next regulations, such as External Exhaust Gas Recirculation (E-EGR) with diesel particulate filters for the F series models. The company has said that this approach minimises the impact on cost and need for larger engine bays.

Larger engines from FPT will use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to treat the exhaust gas with a catalytic fluid and, while this reduces operating costs compared to Tier 3 solutions, requires more space within the vehicle.

In addition, FPT has said that it will also introduce common rail upgrades, high pressure direct injection systems and a double turbo two stage system. FPT claims that these innovations will increase fuel economy and boost power by up to 15%.
